Spiritual Health Is Important to Physical Healing
The Bibles says, "Beloved, I pray that you prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers." Many times our physical illness and ailments are directly related to our spiritual and emotional health. If we are living in fear, negativity, anger, resentment, or abnormal amounts of stress, this is going to affect not only our spiritual health, but our physical health as well. According some ministers and many alternative health experts, many of the diseases prevalent in the world today, are said to have their roots in spiritual health and well-being. In fact, Louise Hays' book, "You Can Heal Your Life," references or links all physical disease to spiritual or emotional factors.
If our spiritual well-being is a precursor to physical illness, then it reasons that healing our spiritual or inner being can lead to healing in a physical bodies as well. When you are feeling well spiritually and emotionally, you will also feel better physically. When there is no chaos within the soul and the mind, it helps to promote physical health. Even when the body falls ill, our attitude plays a huge role in how the disease progresses and how long it may last. The Bible tells us to "walk by faith and not by sight." Even in the midst of illness, we can keep our faith in God to heal and guide us through times of uncertainty and to ward off fear.
The best person to judge your spiritual health is you. To begin, examine your heart or mind for thoughts of fear, anger, anxiety, unforgiveness, negativity or any other toxic emotions. Most people have a predominate emotion that rules their life. When we hold unto negative or toxic emotions it is like releasing poison to our body as well as our spirit. This dis-ease can literally make us sick. To promote physical healing, you want to first rid your mind of any emotions that do not promote love, joy, peace, and faith. These are often called the fruits of the spirit. Filling your heart overflowing with these fruits will open the door to God's healing light while filtering out those negative emotions that keep you in spiritual darkness and that foster physical illness.
The Bible tells us that it "rains on the just as well as the unjust." That means that we all have our shares of joy and pain, whether we love God or not. The difference is how we perceive and live through our crisis. By maintaining good spiritual health, you will be better equipped to face the problems around you. Building your faith in God during the uneventful times in life will help you to keep the faith during times when your circumstances and health are challenged.
Some of the best methods for maintaining and staying spiritually healthy are meditation, prayer, deep breathing, reading Bible scriptures or other positive readings, and spending time in nature. All of these have healing powers that promote emotional health and well-being. By incorporating these practices in our daily life, we learn to let go of toxic emotions like fear, anger, and bitterness. Reading scriptures help us to get our mind off of the problem and instead put it on the love and faithfulness of God.
Healing may not always be instantaneous even if we have the most positive attitudes, but that is when our faith comes in to fill in the gaps. It is a time to learn to become closer and more dependent on God to guide and see us through. It is a time so listen to that still small voice of comfort in our heart. It is a time to be thankful knowing that all things are working together for our highest good. God is in control.
