Autism Treatment – Neurological Inflammation
We understand that inflammation can be a large issue in chronic illness. Degenerative conditions like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and cancer all have their roots in inflammation and it can be even more problematic if it is chronic inflammation. In Autism we also see inflammation as an issue and particularly neurological inflammation. Tumor necrosis factor and interferon gamma are two markers that can indicate there is inflammation that may be impacting these children neurologically.
Some kids on the spectrum have a real problem with digestive inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease in particular. However any inflammation generated whether it is in the gut or the blood stream, whether it is from a vaccine reaction, a virus, or a food sensitivity can have a detrimental impact on the brain. Neurological inflammation can impact kids both globally and in specific areas, especially the temporal lobes which are located on the side of the head. The left temporal lobe is where some of the language areas are located. Inflammation can cause a decrease in blood flow which then reduces the oxygen supply. You can see how impactful this can be, especially in the brain.
Yet there are a few remedies that have been implemented in order to counteract neurological inflammation. Actos has been used on people with Autism to reduce neurological inflammation with fairly good success. Originally a medication for diabetics to help control their blood sugar, it was found to have a positive impact on the way the cells in the body produce inflammation. Another medication that is helpful for inflammation is called spironolactone. Spironolactone is also a medication to regulate sodium and potassium levels which aids in reducing edema or swelling, especially of the lower extremities and it is used to treat women with hirsutism, or over active testosterone production. Another treatment for inflammation in Autism is hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases oxygen to the brain by increasing the blood flow and it also seems to help inflammation by the pressure that it provides as well. Another very promising anti-inflammatory is actually and interesting herbal remedy, it is an Indian spice called Turmeric. The active ingredient is curcumin and it is showing good results at aiding in the inflammation of the gut and neurological system in children with Autism. So we understand how prevalent inflammation can be in chronic illness and also in Autism spectrum disorders. But as you do more research you can understand more and be aware that there are things out there to help.
